The evolution of a town captured in a large mural
When it was decided to refurbish the Legislative Chamber of Hernani Town Hall, it was always important to maintain the essence of the town’s history.
And this result is captured in the 45 metres of mural created by the artist from the town, Victor Goikoetxea. The artist wanted to use this to take us through the history of Hernani and its sources of employment, as well as the past and present importance of apple trees and cider bars for the town.
Life in farmhouses, the important role of the Urumea River in the economic development of Hernani, the era of the Orbegozo Foundry and the world of bertsolarism are all present in this mural. In fact, the mural has two bertsos, one of José Manuel Lujambio, “Txirrita”, representing the past, and the other of Maialen Lujanbio, representing the present.
A futuristic material in the centre of the mural symbolises the future. This work with “character and strength”, as the artist himself describes it, can be visited by locals, visitors and tourists alike.
