Megalithic sites

Journey back to prehistoric times

As in other areas near the mountains of Euskal Herria, in the mountains of Hernani we find megalithic sites of great importance that help us to understand part of the way of life of our ancestors. There is no better way to find out more than visiting the following megalithic stations:

Igorin-Akola

This megalithic complex lies between the towns of Hernani, Astigarraga and Donostia, with seven dolmens in Hernani alone. The most important of these is the so-called Sagastietako Lepoa, which is the most striking and best preserved.

Muniskue

The boundary between the municipalities of Hernani and Urnieta crosses from one side of this complex to the other. Here there is a dolmen, a cromlech and a menhir, all of which form one of the most beautiful complexes in the town.

The Ondiri Bira, Larregain and Epele stretches of the Hernani Network of Hiking Trails are particularly suitable for visiting these sites.

Furthermore, the Larregain and Epele stretches allow us to visit the Mojones de Sel and Artamugarriak. These stone boundary markers have been widely used in the Urumea valley to mark the centre of the sel or free enclosure, within a forest operation environment.
