Lime Kilns
For many years, lime was used by local baserritarras (farmers) to treat their land. This technique lasted until the middle of the 20th century.
This is why, both in Hernani and in nearby towns, caleras (old lime kilns) were built next to the houses. They were used to prepare fertiliser for the soil or material to whitewash the walls of the houses, among other things.
Today, we can find several lime kilns within the boundaries of Hernani. To find the Karobieta lime kiln, one of the easiest to reach and most typical, you should follow the Santa Barbara trail on the Hernani Network of Hiking Trails or visit it directly, as it is close to the historic centre.
