Ereñotzu Neighbourhood
Ereñotzu, natural and industrial heritage from the Urumea basin
Located 6.5 kilometres from the old town of Hernani, since 2010 Ereñotzu has been a minor local entity of Hernani and is undoubtedly one of the neighbourhoods with the most character.
In addition to its remarkable landscapes, the neighbourhood of Ereñotzu also has an important industrial past. In fact, the earliest known records mentioning this neighbourhood correspond to the activity of the foundry, which, during the 19th century, gave it great importance.
Next to the current Fagollaga house is the Real Fábrica de Anclas de Fagollaga (Royal Fagollaga Anchor Factory), first a foundry and, later, a hydraulic cement factory. Today, the facilities house a small hydroelectric power station.
On leaving Ereñotzu, we find the remains of the Latse Factory. Created in 1887, this company produced alcohol, vinegar, tar and coal. Close to this location are the remains of the farmhouse where the famous bertsolari, Txirrita, was born.
The Ereñotzu and Latse stretches of the Hernani Network of Hiking Trails are particularly suitable for discovering all these treasures.
