Executions in Hernani during the Civil War
One of the darkest moments in the history of Hernani took place in October 1936, when over 200 people were executed.
Some of these people were executed at the gates of the town cemetery and others in the vicinity of Galarreta. Moreover, people imprisoned under Franco’s regime were killed as they left the prison in Ondarreta.
Many of the bodies of those executed have still not been found to this day. In 2003, at the request of the Town Council itself, the Sociedad de Ciencias Aranzadi (Aranzadi Science Society) opened up the well in the cemetery to look for some of the remains, but it was empty.
To pay them a well-deserved tribute, the town of Hernani has a commemorative monument at the entrance to its cemetery, Argi Horma, the work of Carlos López de Ceballos.
