Akelarre
Akelarre: or how the ‘witches’ celebrate the most magical of nights
On the evening of 23rd June, the eve of San Juan, Hernani celebrates the summer solstice with a very special event: the akelarre, which is followed by the burning of the San Juan bonfire.
After travelling through the most central streets in a popular parade or kalejira, it comes to a stop at around 7pm in Gudarien Plaza, where a representation of the akelarre is held, in which the sorginak or witches, the akerra or billy goat and different characters from the Inquisition take part.
It is a hugely popular event, so it is well worth arriving at the plaza a good while beforehand, so that you can find a space to enjoy this performance organised by the young people of the municipality that, year after year, brings together the people of Hernani and visitors from other nearby towns.
